Note: This couplet continues with the series on another aspect of the essential nature of OmniLight: Supreme Bliss (Tamil: இன்பம்; Sanskrit: आनन्द or Ānanda).

The “eye of soul-knowledge” refers to the deepest and fundamental mode of knowledge to which the much vaunted intellect itself is an object of knowledge (Tamil:அறிவுக்கு அறிவு; Sanskrit: चैतन्य or Chaitanya). It is the eye of pure awareness and intelligence beyond the reach of intellect.

Ramalingam has developed the Vedantic notion of Satchidananda in original ways in these couplets on the சத்து or Reality (Sanskrit: सत्) or Sat), சித்து or Intelligence (Sanskrit: चित् or Chit), and இன்பம் or Bliss (Sanskrit: आनन्द or Ānanda) aspects of the essential nature of OmniLight (அருட்பெருஞ்ஜோதி).

The Arutperunjothi Agaval is Ramalingam’s magnum opus of spiritual enlightenment poetry composed in 798 couplets in 1872. In later posts, I will offer commentaries on these couplets.
