Arutperunjothi Agaval: Couplet: 760

உயங்கிய உள்ளமு முயிருந் தழைத்திட

வயங்கிய கருணை மழைபொழி மழையே!

The

Outpouring

Resplendent

Rain

Of

Divine

Compassion,

Which

Rejuvenated

My

Soul

And

Body

Withering

In

Distress,

OmniLight Of Supreme Compassion!

Notes:

This couplet begins the pentad of couplets (five couplets) which use rain as a symbol of the cleansing and rejuvenating powers of the outpouring compassion of the OmniLight.

The word “உயங்கிய” (uyangiya) at the start of this couplet is derived from உயங்கு” (uyangu) which signifies both withering or emaciation and distress or suffering. And the word “வயங்கிய” (vayangiya) at the start of the second line is derived from “வயங்கு” (vayangu) which signifies resplendence.

The Arutperunjothi Agaval is Ramalingam’s magnum opus of spiritual enlightenment poetry composed in 798 couplets in 1872. In later posts, I will offer commentaries on these couplets.
