This blog is devoted to the exposition and analysis of the post-religious and pure theistic path of wisdom and harmony (சமரச சுத்த சன்மார்க்கம்) envisioned by the Indian-Tamilian mystic, poet, and philosopher Chidambaram Ramalingam (1823 – 1874). Note: Jivakarunya Ozhukkam or "The Ethic Of Compassion For Sentient Beings", Arutperunjothi Agaval or "OmniLight Invocations", and the tetralogy of "Suddha Sanmarga Vinappams" or "The Petitions Of Suddha Sanmargam", constitute the authentic central writings of the later Ramalingam. In this blog, I will adhere to the principle that only the views expressed in these writings are representative of Ramalingam's Samarasa Suddha Sanmargam teachings. This couplet continues to invoke beneficial and delicious natural substances to convey the bliss and benevolence of the OmniLight.
In invoking these delicious natural substances, such as fruits and so forth, to describe the experience of the bliss of the OmniLight, I think that Ramalingam is also recommending them for their beneficial effects. It should also be noted that these fruits are manifestations of the supreme compassion of OmniLight. They have many useful functions in supporting life-forms.
The Arutperunjothi Agaval is Ramalingam’s magnum opus of spiritual enlightenment poetry composed in 798 couplets in 1872. In later posts, I will offer commentaries on these couplets.

Travelers & Plane Tree by Arthur Rackham – “TWO TRAVELERS, worn out by the heat of the summer’s sun, laid themselves down at noon under the widespreading branches of a Plane-Tree. As they rested under its shade, one of the Travelers said to the other, “What a singularly useless tree is the Plane! It bears no fruit, and is not of the least service to man.” The Plane-Tree, interrupting him, said, “You ungrateful fellows! Do you, while receiving benefits from me and resting under my shade, dare to describe me as useless, and unprofitable?’ Some men underrate their best blessings.” (Aesop: Aesop’s Fables: 294. The Travelers and the Plane-Tree)

Notes:
This couplet employs the symbols of the cooling shade provided by the boughs of a tree, the gentle and soothing breeze, and their alleviation of distress in the intense heat of a summer, to describe the succor provided by the OmniLight, to those who have attuned to it, in the face of the sufferings caused by the passions.
